The Engine Shed Wetherby Wedding Photographer
Your wedding in an 1847 railway goods shed, photographed from the floor and the balcony. Real moments, no stiff posing, and prices on the page.
Two photographers, one story
Three weddings, three completely different rooms, and one balcony we always head straight for
The Engine Shed is a converted 1847 railway goods shed on York Road in Wetherby, West Yorkshire. It’s a family-run wedding venue with a mezzanine wrapped round a huge main room, and space for 180 at the wedding breakfast and 450 in the evening.
We’re Jon and Mary, the husband-and-wife team behind Stories Of I Do, and we’re one of the Engine Shed’s preferred suppliers. You’ll find us at most of their wedding fayres. We’ve photographed a summer ceilidh here, a travel-themed September wedding with a Morris Minor, and a Doctor Who wedding with a TARDIS on the Mezzanine. Each time the same room looked completely different. Each time we ended up on the balcony for the walk down the aisle.

Why couples choose the Engine Shed
One building, the whole day
Ceremony, meal and party all happen under one roof, and the venue is exclusively yours for the day.
A room that turns into anything
Ceilidh hall, fairy-light canopy, TARDIS party. We’ve seen all three, and you’d struggle to recognise it as the same space.
Food made in-house
No outside caterers. Everything is cooked by the Engine Shed’s own team, and the Traditional menu comes with a free tasting evening.
Easy for guests
Fourteen miles from Leeds and York, eight from Harrogate, just off the A1(M), with 70 free parking spaces on site.
How we work
You get in touch
Send us your date and a bit about your plans. We reply ourselves, not with an automated email, and we’re happy to meet for a coffee or at one of the Engine Shed’s fayres.
We plan the details
Before the day we go through your timings, your group list and anything that matters to you, like the friends playing at the ceremony or the TARDIS you’ve hired, so nothing gets missed.
We shoot the day
There are two of us, so we can cover both sides of the morning and both ends of the aisle. We work documentary-style and keep out of the way.
You get your gallery
A sneak peek arrives within the week. Your full gallery follows within 12 weeks, fully edited, in a private online gallery you can share and order prints from.
The Main Room and the Mezzanine

The Main Room
The ground floor, and the heart of the building. If you’re having more than 120 guests at your ceremony, it happens down here, and then the room is turned round for the wedding breakfast and becomes the evening party. It has a hydraulic stage at one end in front of a brick wall of lit arched windows, a big oak sprung dance floor, and colourful evening lighting that looks brilliant from above.
All three of our Engine Shed couples married in the Main Room. It’s a big room, and it’s never looked the same twice. White chairs and giant LOVE letters at Becca and Sam’s wedding. Blossom trees and a canopy of fairy lights across the whole ceiling at David and Nena’s.

The Mezzanine
Upstairs, running round the Main Room behind ornate iron railings. It has its own bar and dance floor, high ceilings with exposed beams and fairy lights, and natural daylight. It’s where your drinks reception usually happens. For ceremonies of up to 120, you can marry up here, then go straight to the drinks without your guests having to move.
For us it’s the most useful spot in the building. From the railings you can see the whole room at once: the walk down the aisle, the first dance, and the whole dance floor mid-ceilidh.

The front and the side of the building
The outside is honey-coloured railway stone, with huge black arched doors and a covered timber canopy over the entrance. There’s a paved forecourt at the front that fits your whole wedding for a group photo, and iron staircases round the side. That’s where we do portraits.
🚂 Did you know?
The building opened in 1847 on the York and North Midland Railway’s line between Harrogate and Church Fenton, as part of Wetherby’s original station on York Road. Passengers moved to a new station on Linton Road in 1902, but goods trains kept using this one until it closed in 1964, in the Beeching cuts.
Strictly speaking, though, it was never the engine shed. It’s the old goods shed. Wetherby’s actual railway engine shed is a separate listed building nearby on York Road. We like to think the name is a promotion it earned.
Do You Photograph During The Ceremony?
Yes, all of it, from the moment you walk in to the moment you’re married. Jon is always at the front, so he catches your faces as you see each other and say your vows. Mary moves around the room, and at the Engine Shed that includes going up to the Mezzanine for the walk down the aisle, so we get both ends of the same moment.
The overhead shot of the aisle from the Mezzanine is one of the best photos this venue gives you. Most venues don’t have a balcony to take it from.
Once you’re at the front, we work from the sides rather than the aisle, so we’re never standing between you and your guests. No flash during the vows, no moving around while the registrar is talking, no directing you.
We photograph your guests too: your mum’s face as you walk in, your friends in the tuba quartet watching you while they play. With two of us working the same room, one of us sometimes ends up in the other’s shot. When that happens, we digitally remove ourselves before you see your gallery, so the photos show your day, not your photographers.

What an Engine Shed wedding costs
Guide checked and updated: 1 October 2026. The Engine Shed prices its weddings as packages, so the cost depends on the day of the week, your guest numbers, the menu and your drinks. As a starting point for 2027:
| Option | 2027 starting price |
|---|---|
| Full package (venue, food, styling and co-ordination), 60 guests, Sunday–Thursday | from £5,799 |
| Venue hire only, Sunday–Thursday, before food and drink | from £2,029 |
Fridays, Saturdays and bank holidays cost more, and there are twilight and evening-only options too. All food is cooked by the Engine Shed’s own team, and there’s no corkage.
Get the full price list from the Engine Shed. Their wedding brochure has every package, menu and drinks price for 2027 and 2028, straight from the venue, so it’s always the latest version. Request the Engine Shed wedding brochure or book a viewing with Lee, the wedding manager.
FAQ – Questions Stories Of I Do couples ask us most
How many guests can the Engine Shed hold?
The Engine Shed seats up to 180 for the wedding breakfast in the Main Room and holds up to 450 for the evening reception. Ceremonies of up to 120 can be on the Mezzanine. Bigger ceremonies are downstairs in the Main Room. Some wedding directories still list 210 for dining, but the venue’s own figure is 180.
How much is a wedding at the Engine Shed Wetherby?
In 2027, the Engine Shed’s full package for 60 guests starts from £5,799 midweek, and venue hire on its own starts from £2,029 before food and drink. Fridays, Saturdays and bank holidays cost more. For exact prices for your date, request the Engine Shed’s wedding brochure or book a viewing with Lee.
How much would a 100-guest wedding at the Engine Shed cost?
It depends on your day, your menu and your drinks. The Engine Shed’s full package is priced for 60 guests, with extra guests added per head, so the most accurate figure is a quote from Lee, the wedding manager, or the brochure on the Engine Shed’s website. For photography, most of our couples book 9 hours with us, which is £1,390.
Should we get married in the Main Room or on the Mezzanine?
If more than 120 people are coming to your ceremony, it has to be the Main Room. Under 120, it’s your choice. The Mezzanine lets everyone go straight from the vows to the drinks reception without moving. The Main Room gives you the big walk down a long aisle, with us photographing it from the balcony above. All three of our Engine Shed couples chose the Main Room.
Is the Engine Shed exclusive use?
Yes. The full package gives you the whole building for the day, and a twilight wedding gives you the whole building from 4:30pm. You won’t share the venue with another wedding, so the front of the building and the side are free for your photos whenever you want them.
Can we bring our own caterer or drinks?
No. All food is made and served by the Engine Shed’s own team. There’s no dry hire and no outside caterers, and the venue doesn’t offer corkage. In return you get a proper menu choice: a Traditional five-course menu (with a free tasting evening), a carvery where a guest at each table carves, a BBQ Banquet, or a Go Global sharing menu. Evening food is extra, from street food to bacon sandwiches. The Engine Shed’s brochure has the full menus and prices.
What time does the bar close?
The Engine Shed has a 1am bar licence on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. You don’t need us there until 1am to get photos of a packed dance floor. A couple of hours after the first dance is usually enough, because by then everyone who’s going to dance is up. More on that in our coverage section below.
Is there parking, and can guests get there without a car?
Yes. There are 70 free parking spaces on site. Wetherby is just off the A1(M), about 14 miles from Leeds and York and 8 from Harrogate. The nearest train stations are Leeds, Harrogate, Cattal and Garforth, and guests can get a taxi from any of them. There are also direct buses to Wetherby from Leeds, Harrogate and York.
Is there accommodation at the Engine Shed?
No, the Engine Shed doesn’t have bedrooms. The venue arranges discounted rates at the Days Inn at Wetherby Services, about six minutes’ drive away. The Mercure Wetherby is about five minutes’ drive away; Sam and his groomsmen got ready there before Becca and Sam’s wedding. If you’d like to walk to your ceremony, stay in Wetherby town centre. Nena got ready at a cottage in town and walked to the venue in her dress.
Can we walk to the Engine Shed from Wetherby town centre?
Yes. It’s about 0.6 miles from the Market Place, roughly a 15-minute walk. Nena did exactly that on her wedding day, with Mary walking alongside. If the weather’s against you, it’s a few minutes in a taxi.
Can we have confetti and sparklers at the Engine Shed?
Yes, both are allowed. All three of our Engine Shed couples had confetti out the front under the Engine Shed sign as they left the ceremony, and Becca and Sam had a sparkler exit under the covered entrance canopy once it got dark. Hand the confetti to a bridesmaid or usher in advance so they can get everyone lined up quickly. For sparklers, wait until it’s properly dark: in mid-September that was around 8pm.
What happens if it rains?
It’s Yorkshire, so we plan for it. The covered canopy over the front entrance is big enough for confetti, and the Mezzanine has natural light and plenty to work with for portraits. The group photos can move inside to the Main Room. Fran and Andy’s plan was “outside if dry, inside if not”, and we’d suggest you think about it the same way.
Do we need to leave the Engine Shed for portraits?
No. The side of the building has tall black arched doors, honey-coloured stone and iron staircases, all a few steps from the front door, and that’s where we photographed Fran and Andy, and David and Nena. If you’d like a change of scene and you’ve got a car, Spofforth Castle is about ten minutes’ drive away. Becca and Sam went there in a Morris Minor.
Is the Engine Shed wheelchair accessible?
Yes. You can get into the building in a wheelchair, and the whole ground floor, including the Main Room, is completely flat. There’s a stairlift up to the Mezzanine, so guests who can’t manage stairs can still join the drinks reception or a Mezzanine ceremony. If anyone in your group will need it, mention it to Lee when you book so the team can plan around it.
Is the Engine Shed too dark for wedding photos?
No. Upstairs, the Mezzanine gets natural daylight, so it works well for portraits during the drinks reception. The Main Room has fairy lights along the beams and colourful lighting in the evening, which looks brilliant in photos, especially looking down on the dance floor from the Mezzanine. On a winter wedding, the light outside goes early, so if you’d like portraits outdoors in daylight, we’ll plan them straight after the ceremony.
When was the Engine Shed in Wetherby closed?
As a railway building, in 1964. The goods shed opened in 1847 as part of Wetherby’s original station on York Road. Passenger trains moved to a new station in 1902, and goods trains kept using it until it closed in 1964 under the Beeching cuts. Today it’s a family-run events venue that has been hosting weddings for more than fourteen years.

How Long Do We Need A Photographer For?
Our 6-hour photography package is the one most couples book, and most add a few extra hours, usually to around 9. Our Engine Shed couples booked between 8 and 10. Here’s roughly how a day there runs, based on Fran and Andy’s midday ceremony:
| 1 HR before | We arrive: details, the room set up, guests arriving |
| 20 MIN | The ceremony in the Main Room |
| 10 MIN | Confetti out the front |
| 20 MIN | Group photos on the forecourt |
| 20 MIN | Portraits round the side of the building |
| 1.5 HRS | Drinks reception on the Mezzanine, while the room is turned round |
| 2.5–3 HRS | Wedding breakfast and speeches |
| 20 MIN | Cake and first dance |
| 1 HR+ | The evening party: ceilidh, band or DJ |
Our 6-hour package roughly covers the ceremony through to the speeches. Most Engine Shed couples add a couple of hours, because the best bit of this venue is the evening: the first dance and the dance floor seen from the Mezzanine. If you’d like getting-ready photos, add time at the start. With two of us, we can cover both of you getting ready, even if one of you is in Thirsk and the other is in Wetherby.
Fran and Andy booked 8 hours, with no morning prep, from the ceremony to the end of the first half of the ceilidh. Becca and Sam, and David and Nena, each booked 10 hours, from getting ready to after the first dance. Extra hours are £80 each, so 9 hours of photography, which is what most couples end up with, is £1,390.
