David + Nena: A Doctor Who Wedding at the Engine Shed, Wetherby
There was a full-size TARDIS on the mezzanine. They hired it for the day, and it tells you most of what you need to know about David and Nena’s wedding.
The Doctor Who theme ran right through their day without ever feeling like fancy dress. Red Chucks under David’s suit. A TARDIS charm on Nena’s bouquet. Blue star confetti. A cake with Gallifreyan circles, a starry tier, and the TARDIS and K9 sitting on top. And everywhere you looked, the same deep TARDIS blue.

Getting ready on both sides of Yorkshire
David and his best men got ready at his parents’ house in Thirsk and drove down to Wetherby for about 1pm. Nena stayed at a cottage in Wetherby, a short walk from the Engine Shed. Mary was with her for the morning, and when it was time, they walked to the venue together. If you’re staying in the town centre, it’s absolutely doable in a wedding dress.
The details said it all before anyone was dressed. A veil embroidered with “future Mrs Smart”. Sapphire-blue jewellery and a tiny TARDIS pendant. Navy bridesmaid dresses hanging next to Nena’s. And a pair of red Chuck Taylor All Star Hi 70s laid out next to David’s tie. He wore them with his wedding suit, because the Tenth Doctor would have. Fans will understand.
The ceremony under a canopy of lights
The ceremony was downstairs in the main room. A canopy of fairy lights stretched right across the ceiling, there were white blossom trees at the front, and navy sashes on every chair. Nena walked in with her dad.
From the mezzanine you can see the whole thing at once: the aisle, the lights, and a full room turning round to watch her come in.

Star confetti and everyone out front
Straight after the ceremony, everyone went out through the front doors for confetti. Blue and white stars, of course. Then we kept everyone outside for the big group photo in front of the Engine Shed’s arched doors, with plenty of room for the whole wedding.
Portraits round the side
For portraits we went round the side of the building, as we usually do here. There are big black arched doors, stone walls and an iron staircase, all a few steps from the front door. That was enough for a few quiet minutes away from everyone, then straight back to the party.
The room, the cake and the TARDIS
Inside, the main room was set for the meal under the same canopy of lights: round tables, navy chairs and the blossom trees moved up behind the top table. The cake was by Crafted Cake House. It had three tiers, with Gallifreyan circles on the top tier, constellations on the second, the TARDIS and K9 on top, and a lot of blue ribbon.
A first dance to “Your Song”
Their first dance was “Your Song”, the Ewan McGregor version from Moulin Rouge!, on the main dance floor with the coloured lights on and everyone crowded round the edge. Earlier in the evening there was also a pair of heart-shaped sunglasses up on the mezzanine. We’ll leave that there.
