Ellissa + Anthony: A Small York Wedding at Trembling Madness

Sneak peek: these are a few of our favourites from Ellissa and Anthony’s day. The full story, with many more photos, is coming once their gallery is ready.

Ellissa and Anthony wanted a small, low-key wedding: about 25 people, a register office ceremony, then platters of hot sandwiches and roast potatoes in the upstairs room of a York pub. No speeches, no first dance, no cake-cutting moment to stage. Just their favourite people and a good afternoon in York.

They got ready in two suites at the Grand Hotel and met up there before the ceremony, so they could head off to get married together.

The day at a glance

  • Getting ready: The Grand Hotel, York
  • Ceremony: 1:30pm at York Register Office, Bootham
  • Guests: about 25
  • Portraits: St Mary’s Abbey in Museum Gardens, and a cobbled lane below York Minster
  • Reception: the Blue Room at the House of the Trembling Madness, Lendal
  • Our coverage: 6 hours, 11am to 5pm

A few favourites from the day

After the ceremony at Bootham, there was confetti, then a short list of family photos. Then the two of them came out with us around York: under the trees, among the ruins of St Mary’s Abbey in Museum Gardens, and down a cobbled lane with the Minster towering over the end of it. Everyone else went ahead to the House of the Trembling Madness, and the Blue Room cheered when they walked in.

PLANNING YOUR OWN?

Planning a wedding in York?

A small wedding in York doesn’t need a big venue. A register office ceremony, a walk through Museum Gardens and a room upstairs at the pub can fill an afternoon beautifully, and the city gives you the backdrops for free. We’ve photographed weddings across York, including Abi and Jonathan’s at the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall, Kayleigh and Matt’s at St Wilfrid’s and Louise and Josh’s at the York Marriott.
