Rebecca + Nicholas: An Autumn Wedding in Dewsbury and at Holdsworth House, Halifax

Rebecca and Nicholas got married in the middle of October, and the whole day matched the season. There were deep red and white roses, bridesmaids in red, Nicholas in a chocolate-brown suit, and Holdsworth House’s gardens just starting to turn gold.

The day had two halves. They both got ready at Holdsworth House near Halifax, then drove across to Dewsbury for a midday ceremony at Dewsbury Baptist Church. After that, everyone headed back to the 1633 manor for portraits in the gardens and the reception.

Getting ready at Holdsworth House

They both got ready at Holdsworth House, so there was no dashing between addresses in the morning. Rebecca’s details were laid out on a little round table: lace Steve Madden heels, a pearl necklace in its box, and her bouquet of deep red and white roses. Wrapped round the stems was an embroidered handkerchief with a “B” and a few little heart charms.

Over on Nicholas’s side, the groomsmen helped with the cufflinks.

The ceremony at Dewsbury Baptist Church

Rebecca arrived at Dewsbury Baptist Church in a vintage cream-and-black limousine, and was helped out at the church gates. Inside, in front of a bright blue wall and a wooden cross, the minister married them, and it finished with a kiss.

Confetti and everyone outside

Outside, everyone lined the path with handfuls of confetti, and Rebecca and Nicholas walked out through all of it. Then we gathered the whole wedding outside the church for one big photo: families, red bridesmaids, grey suits and all.

When the car pulled away, the guests crowded onto the pavement to wave them off.

Autumn in the gardens at Holdsworth House

Back at Holdsworth House, we took the two of them out into the gardens. The house is a Grade II* listed Jacobean manor, built in 1633 from Yorkshire sandstone with narrow leaded windows. The walled gardens round it are full of little corners. In mid-October there was golden ivy over the stone steps and sun coming low through the trees, and the old stone gate pillars framed the house behind them.

“A house built in 1633, walled gardens, and October doing the colouring in.”

The reception

Their guests gave them a proper welcome into the reception, cheering and waving their napkins over their heads. The cake was two white tiers with deep red and white roses. On top was a LEGO bride and groom under a little white arch, surrounded by pink LEGO flowers.

PLANNING YOUR OWN?

Planning a wedding at Holdsworth House?

Holdsworth House is a Grade II* listed Jacobean manor near Halifax, built in 1633. It hosts just one wedding a day, for anything from two guests to 150, and has walled gardens, a 17th-century stone gazebo and 32 bedrooms. It’s lovely in any season, but in October the gardens are hard to beat. We’ve photographed here before, for Curtis and Sophie and Angela and Philip.
