Kay + Steven: A Stables Country Club Wedding in Bury
Before the wedding, Kay told us three things. She loves sunsets. She loves anything boho and a bit whimsical. And she and Steven are both a bit daft and love a laugh.
All three turned up on the day. There was a dried-flower bouquet in soft pinks, and a pair of LEGO minifigures on the cake. And just as we took them outside for portraits, a low September sun came through the trees.

Arriving at the Horseshoe Barn
The whole day happened at the Stables Country Club, on Walshaw Road on the edge of Bury: ceremony, meal, speeches and dancing. That makes for an easy day for everyone. Nobody needs a taxi, and there’s no gap in the middle while guests drive between a church and a reception.
The ceremony was in the Horseshoe Barn. Inside, it was set out with dusty-blue sashes on every chair, a white aisle and strings of fairy lights across the beams. Guests gathered on the path outside, and Steven got his buttonhole sorted at the front while the room filled up.
A ceremony with the kids in the wedding party
Kay arrived along the cobbled path with her bridesmaids and flower girls in pink, and their son beside her in a suit to match Steven’s. The girls went down the aisle first, then Kay followed with their son. Their kids were at the heart of the whole day, from the aisle to the top table.
After the vows came the kiss under the floral arch, then the signing at a table set with blue and pink flowers, under a neon sign that said “Always & Forever”.
Confetti, then everyone on the lawn
Everyone filed out of the barn ahead of them to line the path, and Kay and Steven walked back out through a shower of confetti. Then we got everyone onto the lawn for one big photo of the whole wedding. It’s the photo that shows you how many people turned up for you.
Kay and Steven had given us a list of family groups, from just the two of them with their kids up to that big one of everyone. We worked through it on the lawn, then let everyone get back to the drinks.
Golden hour by the lake
The Stables sits in its own grounds, with lakes and woodland a short walk from the barn. Kay had told us she loves a sunset, so we waited until the light dropped low and then took the two of them down to the trees by the water.
We gave them a few minutes on their own: no stiff posing, just a walk and a cuddle while the sun came through the leaves behind them.
“Kay told us she loves a sunset. We just had to wait for it.”
Boho flowers, LEGO and crochet cake
The little things were pure Kay and Steven. Her bouquet was dried flowers: pink roses, pampas, wheat and eucalyptus, which suited her boho style exactly. The wedding cake was simple and pretty, with dried flowers and a wooden “Kay & Steven” topper. On top sat Just Married bunting, plus two LEGO minifigures: Gizmo from Gremlins and Indiana Jones.
Next to the cake were two crocheted cake slices with smiley faces. It’s that kind of detail that tells you exactly who you’re photographing.
Speeches, a toast and the cake
Kay walked into the room for the meal to a round of applause, with an Indian buffet waiting. Then came the speeches. Steven spoke, Kay spoke too, and the room raised its glasses. When it came to cutting the cake, Steven made sure he got to the icing first.
A first dance to “Iris”
They finished our part of the day with a first dance to “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls, on the wooden dance floor under coloured lights. Then the rest of the guests joined them, and we left them to it.

Planning a wedding near Bury or Manchester?
We’re based in Leeds, but Bury is an easy trip over the Pennines, and we photograph across Greater Manchester and Lancashire. A venue like the Stables, with the ceremony, grounds and party all in one place, gives you more time for the good bits and less time in the car. You can see more of our weddings this side of the hills at Nicola and David’s Bredbury Hall wedding, Vicky and Richard’s at Bartle Hall and our Out Barn venue guide.
