Beverly + Jane: A Hyde Park Picture House Wedding, Leeds
Beverly and Jane got married on a sunny Monday morning, in a cinema. Then they went to a garden full of flowers for fizz, a fig cake and their favourite people.
They gave us a list of group photos, but told us they wanted to leave lots of room for things to happen naturally. That’s exactly how we like to work.
The day at a glance
- Ceremony: 10am at the Hyde Park Picture House, Leeds
- The venue: a cinema that opened in 1914, Grade II listed and still gas-lit
- Group photos: on the Picture House staircase
- Reception: a garden party nearby
- Cake: figs and pistachios
- Our coverage: 3 hours, 9:50am to 12:50pm
A wedding at the pictures
The Hyde Park Picture House opened on 7 November 1914, and it’s still showing films more than a century later. It’s Grade II listed and believed to be the only gas-lit cinema left in the world. After a big restoration, it reopened in 2023, and it’s licensed for weddings.
Even the foyer screen joined in, with “Congratulations Beverly & Jane: warmest wishes from everyone here at the Hyde Park Picture House”. Beverly and Jane walked into the auditorium together, past guests in the red velvet seats.
The ceremony under the red curtains
The ceremony took place at the front of the auditorium, under the red screen curtains. The registrars sat at a table with a Tiffany-style lamp, and the guests filled the seats. A close friend of the family, who’s a poet, performed during the ceremony.
The light in there is all red velvet and warm lamps, and the photos keep that glow. Then came the vows, held hands and two rings.
“Red velvet seats, red curtains and a gold balcony: a Monday morning at the pictures.”
Signing, a kiss and a round of applause
They signed the register under the glow of the Tiffany lamp, and stopped halfway through for a kiss. Then there were hugs in the aisle, and the whole auditorium was on its feet clapping.
Fizz in the foyer and photos on the staircase
Out in the foyer, there was fizz and orange juice lined up on the wooden counter, and a lot of hugging at the bar. Beverly and Jane had asked for the group photos on the Picture House staircase. It’s red-carpeted, with stained-glass windows, and you can fit a whole wedding on it when you shoot from the landing above.
Outside the Picture House
On the way out, we took a few minutes outside the front of the building. There’s the old ticket booth, the cream tiled pillars and the big red “Hyde Park” sign, all in bright August sunshine.
A garden party, a linocut and a fig cake
Then everyone moved on to a garden party nearby. There were tables under a pear tree, vases of garden flowers, a little glasshouse at the end and festoon lights strung overhead.
There was a present too: a linocut print reading “Bev & Jane, 10th August 2026”. It’s full of little details, with magpies, figs, pears and pomegranates around a drawing of the Picture House itself. And the cake was a showstopper, heaped with figs and pistachios, which Beverly and Jane cut together among the flowers.
